If you’re an N78 cell phone owner, you should be happy to know that Nokia has made available a less than 1MB firmware release for it. The update which can be downloaded through either the Nokia Software Updater or directly through your Nokia N78 includes a number of performance improvements including softkey selection, Bluetooth stability, video playback, email sending and alarm clock functions. I sincerely hope Nokia extends the over-the-air download mechanism to other Nseries handsets such as the N82 or the N95. They are already capable of receiving small updates such as those of the N78, so this isn’t wishful thinking.

It’s fantastic news that Firmware Over-the-Air (FOTA) updating is being embraced by more and more mobile phone manufacturers and operators. FOTA allows consumers to get the latest software improvements and new features delivered directly to their mobile phones over the air (no hassle of a cable connected to your PC, or worse – needing to visit a service center to have the phone repaired). FOTA also has the added benefit for manufacturers and operators of reducing customer support costs, increasing service revenues, improving consumer satisfaction, and reducing churn.
50% of all new phones have FOTA. Don’t buy a phone that can’t be updated! For a full list of FOTA-enabled phones, check out this link: http://www.redbend.com/markets/mobile_phones.asp
